A Chaos Lich Witch feels like one of those league starters that just clicks once you get the rhythm down. You tag a pack, fire the right spell, and the screen starts to empty before you've had time to overthink it. Early on, don't obsess over perfect gear, but do keep an eye on useful PoE 2 Items while you move through the campaign, especially caster pieces with mana and spell stats. The build's core is still the old favourite: Contagion and Essence Drain. Contagion marks enemies with chaos damage over time, then spreads that pressure when they die. Essence Drain gives you the stronger hit-and-drain effect needed to start the chain, particularly against rares and early bosses.
Getting the first skill setup right
In the opening acts, the build shouldn't feel like a one-button setup. You'll want Contagion for packs and Essence Drain for tougher targets, but there's room for control as well. Entangle is handy when enemies rush you or when you need a second to reposition. It's not glamorous, but it saves lives. Once Bonestorm becomes available, it gives the character a different kind of pressure. Since it channels bone spikes and deals physical damage, it helps when you're waiting for damage-over-time effects to do their job or when a boss isn't giving you clean windows to cast.
Supports that make the build feel sharper
Support gems are where the early build starts to feel less clunky. Swift Affliction is a strong pick for damage-over-time skills because it pushes non-ailment damage higher, even though the duration gets shorter. That trade is usually fine while clearing, because monsters aren't meant to live long anyway. If you're using Bonestorm often, Corrosion is worth considering on hitting skills that can apply poison, since the armour break helps against sturdier enemies. Orb of Storms can also stay on your bar for extra hits and utility. You don't need to force it into every fight, but dropping it during boss phases often feels good.
Gear choices during the campaign
Vendor checks matter more than some players admit. A simple off-hand with the right caster stats can carry you for several zones. Look for spell damage first, then mana, cast speed, and mana regeneration. A Woven Focus or similar caster off-hand is exactly the sort of item that makes early casting smoother. Energy shield bases are also a natural fit, because you're already playing from range and you don't want to waste too much time fixing armour or evasion pieces. If your mana feels bad, solve that before chasing a tiny damage upgrade. A build that can't cast comfortably always feels worse than the tooltip suggests.
Passive routing and the Lich identity
The passive tree should support what the build is already doing well. Lingering Horror is a key pickup because chaos damage and skill effect duration both matter for Essence Drain and Contagion. You'll notice the difference in longer fights, where the damage keeps ticking while you dodge. From there, start planning your route toward Demonic Possession. That node is what gives the build its real Lich flavour through Demon Form, and it's a serious power spike for campaign bosses. As you upgrade your gear, browsing for better Path of Exile 2 Items can help smooth the jump into mid-game, but the build's strength still comes from clean spell use, sensible passives, and not standing still too long.
